Every child needs nutritious food for a healthy start to life. Common sense and a mountain of evidence tell us that childhood hunger and food insecurity have damaging effects on a child’s health, sometimes long-lasting. Studies have linked food insecurity in children with a host of poor health outcomes – anemia, mental and behavioral issues such as aggression, depression, and anxiety, and worse oral health – to name just a few.
When Mrs. Haddad arrived in New York, she bore the weight of uncertainty and the daunting challenge of feeding a family. She spoke no English and, so, every trip to the grocery store felt impossible. With her daughter Lina translating and learning to order groceries online through Market by Met Council, the Haddads discovered a system that honored their dignity and met their cultural needs.
In Brownsville, sisters and first-time mothers Tasheema and Vandeesha turned to WIC to overcome rising food costs and the stigma of seeking help. By embracing support, they ensured their babies had access to healthy nutrition.

With support from Island Harvest, she gained access to healthy food, nutrition guidance, and SNAP benefits, giving her strength to care for herself and her children.
